Setting the Scene
Royal Ascot comes to a close Saturday morning in the States, with one more seven-race card. The day’s feature is the Gr I Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee (Race 3), which attracted a star field of sprinters. #4 KINROSS (4/1) is a familiar face in America, having finished third in the ’22 BC Mile behind Modern Games. He’s been off since last October and this distance may not be his best. #3 KHAADEM (20/1) was a shocking 80/1 winner of this race last year, but he is winless since and would be similarly shocking this year. In other news, America’s final hope of the meet comes in the Gr II Hardwicke (Race 2) – read more about that below – and the meeting wraps up with the 2 3/4-mile Queen Alexandra, where #2 DAWN RISING (2/1) goes for back-to-back victories after taking last year’s edition at 2/1 odds.
American Runners
America is down to its final hope at Royal Ascot, with #9 MISSED THE CUT (7/1) taking a swing in the Gr II Hardwicke for trainer John Sadler. MISSED THE CUT, a son of Quality Road, began his career in the UK but has been US-based since last spring. His marquee victories include the Gr III San Marcos and Gr III San Luis Rey at Santa Anita, and he was most recently second in the Gr II Elkhorn at Keeneland. He should relish this distance, but in order to achieve Ascot glory he’ll need to defeat Aidan O’Brien’s Gr I winner, #2 CONTINUOUS (3/2), and John Gosden’s recent Gr III hero, #8 MIDDLE EARTH (5/2).
