The Americans

After a disastrous opening-day pair of finishes for the Yanks (including Golden Pal last in the King’s Stand), trainer Wesley Ward has two juveniles on the Wednesday docket. Love Reigns kicks off the racecard in the Group 2 Queen Mary (Race 1, 9:30 am ET). She was a 9-3/4 length debut turf sprint winner at Keeneland. She’s favored in the British books at just over 3-1 odds. Ward won the Queen Mary in 2015, ’16 and ’20. Later Wednesday, Seismic Spirit represents the US in the Windsor Castle (Race 6, 12:35 pm ET). The Churchill Downs debut turf sprint maiden runner-up is trading around 12-1 with the British books. Ward last won the Windsor Castle in 2014 with Hootenanny.

The Main Event

The mile and one-quarter Group 1 Prince of Wales’s will be the day’s third offering, and has a select field of five. Bay Bridge is the 11-8 favorite in the British books for jockey Ryan Moore and trainer Sir Michael Stoute. Moore piloted last year’s race winner, while Stoute saddled the Prince of Wales’s victor in 2018 and 2019 most recently. The lightly raced Bay Bridge seeks a sixth consecutive victory, following a 4-race campaign in 2021 and a single victory in his only appearance this year. Japan’s Shahryar exits an international win in the Dubai Sheema Classic and looks to add to his nation’s prominence on the world stage.
