DEL MAR SPOTLIGHT RACES:

First Race:  Post: 2:00 PT
Top Pick: 5-Grazed My Heart (5-1)

This juvenile daughter of Grazen out of a mare by Scat Daddy has the pedigree to improve considerably on turf, so for new trainer Jeff Mullins following $50,000 claim we’re gambling that she will step forward considerably in state-bred maiden turf miler.  Her sprint numbers have increased in each of her three career starts, and under these conditions, even against tougher straight maiden foes, we’re expecting she will step forward again.  She picks up outstanding grass rider Hector Berrios for a stable that has off-the-charts stats with the first-off-the-claim angle, so at 5-1 on the morning line there is considerable wagering value being offered.  As a saver, you may want to toss in on a ticket or two 3-Warren’s Paradice, a good closing third under these conditions last time out after being given a bit too much to do.  She picks up leading jockey Juan Hernandez and is the likely choice and one to beat.

Fourth Race – Post: 3:33 PT
Top Pick: 3-American Cat (3-1)

Was extremely well meant in his debut earlier this month in a similar maiden special weight California-bred dash, but after flashing good speed for a half, gradually weakened to wind up fourth in a race that he appeared to desperately need.  With that tightener behind him, the Dean Pederson-trained gelding should be fitter, sharper, and faster today, and in a race that didn’t come up quite as competitive as the one he exits the son of American Freedom should be capable of grabbing control early and rolling all the way to the wire.  At or near his morning line of 3-1, the sophomore gelding is a strong win play and rolling exotic single.

DEL MAR WORKOUT ANALYSIS AND COMMENTARY:

SEVENTH RACE:

Edgeway (August 21, Del Mar, 5f, 1:00.2h).  Grade: A-
Never looked better while breezing every step of the way and going a full second faster than given, splits of :23.3, :35.2 and :59.2 to the wire before galloping out with a ton left in 1:12 flat to the seven furlong pole.  Right on edge.
