Frank Carulli: Laurel Park Pick 4 Analysis Friday, Nov. 18

Jockey Jeiron Barbosa has emerged as the leading jockey at Laurel Park with 29 wins from 147 mounts this meet. He could play a big part in Friday’s Late Pick 4, as he rides Holding Court (8-1) in the sixth race, R B’s Star (2-1) in the seventh and Blame The Bourbon (4-1) in the ninth for three different barns. Here’s a look at the Pick 4 sequence with a suggested $42 play for the 50-cent wager:

LRL 6th race (2:39 EST) -- SALAGADOOLA ‘stumbled’ when she finished behind several of the same rivals at 1-1/8 miles last out. But she’s worth a second look off her race two back, when she circled the turn 5-wide and finished third behind Caged Pixie, a recent 7-1/2-length winner for $10,000. Not much separated MARTHARITA and LUCKY LORRIANE after they chased a class-dropping, stretch-out sprinter in vain. MARTHARITA edged closer to the runaway winner on the final turn but got caught late by LUCKY LORRAINE for the place spot at one mile.

LRL 7th race (3:08 EST) -- AFJAN earned competitive speed figures for this race in his two main-track route attempts at Saratoga and Churchill Downs, respectively. He lost by double-digit lengths to Gasoline (average 84 Beyer in six starts) and Tepeu (5/1-2-1, $144k) but faces no such rivals today. CHENTI was slowed by a bogged down Meadowlands turf course, but he can’t be ignored off his prior lines. He exited a very productive turf-to-dirt route to start his career, then proved versatile with four consecutive in-the-money finishes on the grass.

LRL 8th race (3:37 EST) -- R B’S STAR stalked and caught Bandits Warrior, a 9-length allowance winner next out, in her latest dirt sprint try for the red-hot Dilodovico barn. Combat Queen also exited that race with back-to-back wins, including a 4-length allowance score. SKIPPER SUE, a $400,000 sales buy, ran away from two rivals in her debut in a race that timed one second slower than a same-day, open $8,000 claimer for the boys.

LRL 9th race (4:06 EST) – Four of the seven 2-year-olds entered in this 6F claiming race come off victories – and all hail from high-percentage barns. No need to pick and choose. Punch the ‘ALL’ button.
