Brian W. Spencer: Del Mar Spot Plays | Sunday, August 24, 2025

Superstar sprinter Sweet Azetca headlines the card in the Race 2 Rancho Bernardo on Sunday at Del Mar. Her 1-5 morning line favoritism could tamp down early returns on the card. I'll focus late in the day with the final pick 3 to close the racing week.

Del Mar - Race 7

#3 Mendelssohns Angel: She outran her 42/1 price in the debut try, and she exits a race I liked a little bit. Could see her moving forward enough to land this one.

#2 Naturally Blonde: She finished ahead of the top choice in that same common race, but she has less upside at this point in time with several races under her belt already. Obvious player.

#5 Fly At Knight: Her only turf try wasn't much, but she is probably capable of something better on the grass today while bringing what could be some dangerous pace.

Race Summary: Mendelssohns Angel showed a little bit of late interest in the debut run, and something just a little bit more stout today might get the job done.

Del Mar - Race 8

#6 Ghost of Midnight: Think this is a fun race for an allowance that looks more like a stakes spot, and he's back fresh off a good run in the San Carlos earlier this year. Slight worry that he wants a touch more distance, but I think he's the one here.

#9 Hejazi: Speed wasn't too far off landing a Grade I last time out and looks like the clear one to beat with this group. He's got a little bit of other pace to deal with, but none of it is the kind of speed he's used to dealing with. Wouldn't argue
with you if you took the classy pace and moved on.

#2 Red Flag: I've always thought a bit more highly of him than his form merits, but his baseline stuff fits well with this crew for a share. That said, he has struggled a bit of late in stakes groups, and that's essentially what he's getting here.

Race Summary: Ghost of Midnight and Hejazi should be tough in here -- the former should offer a bit better price here and may be able to get the last laugh.

Del Mar - Race 9

#9 Margot's Boy: Not sure the price is going to be very appealing, but he has some pace in a race without a whole lot of it, and that should give him the jump on some of the other threats in here. Tighter this time around.

#10 Sydney Street: Never really sure which guy is going to show up, but there are a couple of races on his page that might make him interesting if he can bring it today -- price should reflect the risk.

#1 Lil Nas: Could see him showing a little bit of speed and just plugging away to hang around for a share from the inside. Been some time since he ran a good one, but the price will be big to see if he can sneak in.

Race Summary: Margot's Boy gets a good race shape on paper here, and that should give him the edge turning for home. Think Sydney Street, and maybe even Lil Nas, might be the right ones to add some intrigue to the gimmicks.
