THOROUGHBRED
AFTERCARE ALLIANCE

The 501(c)(3) nonprofit Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance accredits, inspects, and awards grants to approved aftercare organizations to retrain, retire, and rehome Thoroughbreds using industry-wide funding.

NATIONAL Horsemen’s Benevolent
and Protective Association

Founded in 1940, the National Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association (NHBPA) and its Affiliates operate on behalf of Thoroughbred racehorse owners, trainers and backstretch personnel throughout the United States and Canada.

The National HBPA is a non-profit corporation which acts as a trade association working to improve the economic health and public acceptance of the Thoroughbred horse industry in the United States and Canada. The HBPA seeks to improve business conditions for Thoroughbred horsemen and their employees, advance the industry in general, promote cooperation among horsemen of all breeds, and represent the interests of Thoroughbred horsemen before state and federal governments, industry organizations, and trade associations.

FLORIDA THOROUGHBRED RETIREMENT
AND ADOPTIVE CARE

Florida Thoroughbred Retirement and Adoptive Care, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization,  strives to provide retired racehorses both meaningful second careers and an excellent quality of life.   We rehabilitate thoroughbreds by providing professional care and training for each as an individual.  A rigorous screening process attempts to match each Thoroughbred with loving adopters with the goal to provide a new opportunity and purpose for a second career in the show world, polo fields, therapeutic riding program or simply as a loving companion.

CALIFORNIA RETIREMENT
MANAGEMENT ACCOUNT

CARMA is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to providing funding for the rehabilitation, retraining and/or retirement of California-raced Thoroughbred horses.

California Retirement Management Account (CARMA) is a 501c3 non-profit organization founded in 2007 to raise money for retired racehorses. It is responsible for hosting fundraising events, educating owners and trainers on equine retirement, raising awareness and working to unify the racing industry in support of its equine athletes. Ways in which this is accomplished include facilitating the transition of racehorses off the track through its Placement Program and showcasing the breed’s versatility as equestrian mounts at its Thoroughbred Classic Horse Show.

BEYOND THE WIRE

Beyond the Wire is an industry-wide initiative between the Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association, the Maryland Jockey Club, the Maryland Horse Breeders Association and Maryland jockeys. The organization is a first exit from racing program designed to facilitate safe and enriching placements for retiring Maryland based racehorses.

PERMANENTLY DISABLED
JOCKEYS FUND

The Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF) is a 501(c)(3) public charity that provides financial assistance to 60 former jockeys who have suffered catastrophic on-track injuries. Since its founding in 2006, the fund has disbursed nearly $11 million dollars to permanently disabled jockeys, most of whom have sustained paralysis or brain injuries.

AFTER THE IMPACT

After The Impact is a 501c3 public charity started in 2016 to assist veterans and former pro athletes with the "unseen" injuries from the battlefield or field of play.  We recognized early on the similarities between the two communities and how they could help each other in their journeys to mental wellness. Our mission is to facilitate customized treatment for veterans and retired pro athletes with unseen traumatic injuries from the field, including TBI, Anxiety, Depression, PTSD, Transition, Addiction and Suicide prevention. Your donations allow us to keep providing these lifesaving resources and support to our heroes.

1/ST INDUSTRY PARTNERS

Our partners help to support the industry from the ground up by providing enrichment, financial support, and ensuring the safety and health of our horsemen and jockeys. 1/ST provides a portion of our purse to support the partners listed below.

Florida Horsemen’s Benevolent
Protective Association

The Florida Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association represents the interests of over 5,000 Thoroughbred horse owners and trainers who do business in Florida. Some FHBPA members are based in Florida, others have vast operations throughout the globe. But during a race meet, Florida is home to all of us. The FHBPA works to foster and promote their relationships with tracks, community and government, while creating a better economic climate in which our horsemen can do business.

California Thoroughbred
Horsemen’s Foundation

The California Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Foundation, Inc. (CTHF) is a non-profit charitable foundation dedicated to improving the quality, primarily through medical and dental care, of life in the community of stable workers occupied with the care of Thoroughbred racehorses at California’s major racetracks, fair circuit tracks and CHRB recognized off-track training centers.

Maryland Thoroughbred
Horsemen’s Association

The Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association is the officially authorized organization that represents, assists and promotes the interests of Maryland's Thoroughbred owners and trainers. Membership in the MTHA is automatically extended to everyone licensed to own and/or train Thoroughbred racehorses in this state. There is no membership fee to become a member of the association. The MTHA's many activities and services are supported by a nominal deduction of 2 percent off the top of purse monies at Maryland's three Thoroughbred racetracks. Seven standing committees carry out the MTHA's main functions: Aftercare, Backstretch and Safety, Finance, Health and Welfare, Legislative, Racing and Executive. Additional special committees are formed when a need arises.

The Jockeys’ Guild

The Jockeys' Guild is an American trade association based in Lexington, Kentucky, representing Thoroughbred horseracing and American quarter horse professional jockeys.

The Jockeys’ Guild provides jockeys with health, life and accident insurances, as well as short-term and long-term disability benefits.

1/ST HORSE CARE

Each year, 1/ST tracks are home to thousands of horses for training and racing. Every horse must arrive with full veterinarian records, and every horse is examined before they can train or run to ensure they are fully healthy. 1/ST is committed to achieving the highest horse care and safety standards in Thoroughbred racing, and we have a track record of pushing those standards forward. It all starts with doing right by the horse as soon as they arrive at our venues.

In each state where 1/ST operates, we are working closely with local Thoroughbred horse racing associations to eliminate all medications within 48 hours of a race and to ensure pain and anti-inflammatory medication is strictly administered. We strongly believe that no horse should ever run with pain or injury.

At 1/ST, safety starts with the daily inspection of all our dirt, turf and synthetic courses by internationally recognized track surface experts to ensure the safest race and workout surfaces possible.

The safety and care of our athletes is top priority, and that extends to the jockeys and riders who dedicate their lives to the sport. At 1/ST, we work closely with The Jockeys’ Guild to support the implementation of critical safety and equipment protocols to protect jockeys and riders during their careers. As we do with horse aftercare, we go beyond the racetrack to invest in meaningful programs for injured or retired jockeys and riders.

In partnership with the Jockeys’ Guild and the After The Impact Fund, we at 1/ST invested in and developed the only, first-of-its-kind program to facilitate customized treatment for jockeys in conjunction with military veterans and retired pro athletes with unseen traumatic injuries from the field, including TBI, anxiety, depression, PTSD, transition, addiction and suicide prevention. This program was introduced as a pilot in 2017 and has made a profound impact on those who need it most.

1/ST is also proud to support the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund at our racetracks and premier events throughout the year.
